6th Grade Natural Resources Workshop

Butte Soil and Water Conservation District

(pictures by Randy Purser)

On a beautiful day in September Butte Soil and Water Conservation District hosted their annual 6th Grade Natural Resources Workshop.   Students from Butte Middle School and Mackay Elementary met at the Sportsman Access south of the Mackay Dam for hands on presentation by resource professionals.  They then gathered at the Mackay Reservoir at the new group picnic area for a hot dog lunch provided by Butte SWCD

Steve Wright, BLM archeologist from Salmon, demonstrated how knives, spears and arrows were made from obsidian.

Brad Gamett and Mark Wheeler represented the Lost River Coordinated Weed Management Area .  They conducted exercises educating the students about the economic impacts of invasive species in Idaho and especially the Lost River Valleys.   Biological, chemical and mechanical control methods were discusses.  Three live specimens of leafy spurge biological insect control were displayed along with maps, photos and spray equipment.
